The Atkins Diet
- The Atkins Diet, developed by Dr. Robert Atkins, is a well-known low carbohydrate diet. To lose weight people limit their carbohydrates. The theory is that the body burns fat and carbohydrates for energy, but will burn the carbohydrates first. By limiting the carbohydrates the body is forced to burn more fat.
The diet has a two week "induction" phase where the dieter limits their daily intake to no more then 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. During this two week person the dieter will eat mainly meats, poultry, seafood, eggs, cheeses, beacon and sausages. The carbohydrate restriction allow the body to switch from burning glucose to burning stored body fat. This process will cause the body to enter into the state of ketosis as a consequence of running out of excess carbohydrates to burn.
After the first two weeks, dieters can begin adding about 5 more grams of carbohydrates to their diet weekly. The Dieter will continue limiting carbohydrates even into the maintenance portion of the diet.
Advantages of the Atkins Diet

Realizing the benefits of the diet he followed Atkins later popularized the idea as The Atkins Diet in a series of books, starting with Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution in 1972. The Atkins Diet
The Atkins diet hit the diet scene in 1972 when Dr. Atkins published his book, "Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution". And the Atkins diet was really revolutionary. Most diets of the day focused on counting calories and maintaining a low fat diet. Calories were felt to be the enemy and the fewer you ate, the better off you were. Dr. Atkins paid less attention to calories in his diet and more to reducing the number of carbohydrates in the diet. To followers of his diet, the carbohydrates were the problem. The diet promoted the use of lots of protein and a moderate amount of fat with the idea that your metabolism will cause you to lose weight on this diet. read more
